According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, this shrine on Awaji Island is said to have originated in Japan and was created by Izanagi and Izanami, and is said to bring blessings such as matchmaking and safe childbirth.
Located in a corner of the Mihara Plain in the southern part of Awaji Island, Onokorojima Shrine is a historic shrine dedicated to the two deities Izanagi and Izanami, who appear in Japan's creation myth. According to the myth, the two deities stirred the waters with a spear from the Heavenly Floating Bridge, and the droplets solidified to form Onokorojima, or Awaji Island. Based on this legend, Onokorojima Shrine has long been revered as the birthplace of Japan and as a deity of matchmaking and safe childbirth.

The shrine's symbol is its vermilion-painted torii gate, approximately 21.7 meters tall. Its majestic appearance catches the eye even from afar, awe-inspiring visitors. Passing through the gate and into the shrine grounds, one is enveloped in a tranquil, solemn atmosphere. This torii gate is considered one of Japan's three greatest, alongside those at Heian Shrine (Kyoto Prefecture) and Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima Prefecture).

Next to the main shrine, there is a pair of "Enmusubi Fufu Hina" dolls dedicated with the hope of finding love, and many couples and married couples visit the shrine.
