This shrine, a historic site where patriots from the end of the Edo period rest, is home to the graves of Ryoma Sakamoto and Shintaro Nakaoka, and is a must-see power spot for history fans, as it brings to mind a turbulent era.
Located on the slopes of Mount Reizan in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto Reizan Gokoku Shrine is a historic shrine dedicated to many patriots who played an active role from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji Restoration, including Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro. This sacred site, where young men who risked their lives dreaming of a new dawn for Japan still rest in peace, is revered by many. Ryoma and Shintaro's graves are located next to each other, evoking a sense of historical romance.

The shrine grounds are lined with gravestones of many patriots, each one carrying a rich historical weight. In addition to the graves of Ryoma and Shintaro, there are also gravestones for Katsura Kogoro (Kido Takayoshi) and Takasugi Shinsaku, allowing visitors to retrace the footsteps of figures who played an active role during the turbulent period of the late Edo period. Furthermore, from the elevated area within the grounds, a magnificent view of Kyoto city unfolds, offering moving insight into the dreams these men held from this place.

Kyoto Reizan Gokoku Shrine is a place where you can feel the passion of the patriots of the late Edo period, something that cannot be fully described in history textbooks. It is a truly sacred place, especially for history fans.

The Bakumatsu Restoration Museum (Reizan History Museum) is located nearby.
