This is the only museum in Japan dedicated to the turbulent period from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji Restoration. It is a must-see spot for history fans, where you can learn about historical figures and events such as Sakamoto Ryoma and the Shinsengumi in an easy-to-understand manner.
Located near Kyoto's Ryozen Gokoku Shrine, the Ryozen History Museum specializes in the Meiji Restoration. Through valuable documents and exhibits, visitors can learn about the turbulent era in which such patriots as Sakamoto Ryoma, Nakaoka Shintaro, and the Shinsengumi were active. The exhibits delve into the lives and thoughts of the people of the time, as well as the true nature of the events, providing a profound insight into history beyond what can be learned in textbooks.

The museum displays numerous historical documents, including letters from Sakamoto Ryoma and swords used by Shinsengumi members. In particular, a replica of the sword believed to have been used in Ryoma's assassination and a bloodstained folding screen offer a vivid insight into the tense situation of the time. In addition, the theater room features videos showcasing the lives of patriots from the late Edo period, making it easy to understand even for those unfamiliar with history.

We recommend visiting the Ryozen History Museum in conjunction with Kyoto's Ryozen Gokoku Shrine, where Sakamoto Ryoma's grave is located. After visiting the resting place of these heroes, you can immerse yourself even more deeply in the romance of history by learning about the era in which they lived at the museum.
