This ancient temple enshrines the god of wisdom, counted as one of Japan's three great Manjusri temples. It is famous for its national treasure statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva and beautiful gardens, and is a popular power spot for students taking exams and those seeking wisdom.
Located in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, Abe Monjuin is an ancient temple dedicated to Manjusri Bodhisattva, the god of wisdom and one of Japan's three great Manjusri deities. It was founded in 645 by Abe no Kurahashimaro as the clan temple of the Abe clan, famous for the Taika Reforms. The temple is particularly popular during exam season, when many students and their families come to pray for success. Believed to grant academic success and wisdom, the temple attracts many worshippers from across the country.

The greatest attraction of Abe Monjuin is its principal image, the Manjusri Bodhisattva statue, designated a National Treasure. Sculpted by the Buddhist sculptor Kaikei during the Kamakura period, this impressive group statue, featuring Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion accompanied by four attendants, is considered a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. At approximately 7 meters tall, it is the largest wooden statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion in Japan. Its majestic appearance deeply moves those who see it. The Monju Bodhisattva statue is said to have been created by Kaikei, a Buddhist sculptor from the early Kamakura period.

Abe Monjuin Temple is not only a place to receive wisdom, but also a place to enjoy beautiful gardens and historic buildings. In particular, the Kinkaku Ukimido Hall in the center of the garden, beautifully floating on the water, is a popular photo spot.
The temple grounds also have a beautiful garden where flowers bloom in every season, making it a great place to enjoy a stroll.
