This temple was founded in 1651 by the fourth shogun, Ietsuna, as the family temple of the Owari Tokugawa clan. With buildings designated as important cultural properties and the graves of the Tokugawa clan remaining, it is an intellectual spot where you can feel the weight of history.
In 1651, Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the second lord of the Owari Tokugawa clan, built this temple to commemorate the soul of Tokugawa Yoshinao, the first lord of the Owari domain. Major buildings, including the main hall, mountain gate, main gate, and sutra repository, were constructed in the early Edo period and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

The main hall, in particular, represents the pinnacle of Edo-period architectural techniques, and is lavishly decorated down to the smallest detail, making its architectural beauty truly astounding.

The temple grounds are also home to many historical sites, including the Tokugawa family mausoleum and the grave of Mito Komon. Additionally, the temple grounds offer beautiful views, with flowers blooming throughout the seasons.

The greatest attraction of Kenchu-ji Temple is the remains of the Owari Tokugawa family, whose members remain. The quiet resting places of members of the Tokugawa clan, including past lords, their wives, and concubines, convey the weight of history to the present day. Behind the main hall, Tokugawa Yoshinao's mausoleum is surrounded by a solemn atmosphere. It's the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and take in the history behind the scenes.
