The museum is housed in the actual Antarctic research vessel Fuji, which was in service for 18 years from 1965. It is an experiential museum where you can get a close-up look at the wheelhouse and crew quarters and learn about the history of Antarctica and the workings of the vessel.
During its 18 years of service, the Fuji made 17 port calls on the Antarctic continent and 16 on the Showa Station. It was an essential part of Antarctic observation, transporting research team members and supplies, and supporting observation activities.
Inside the Fuji Museum, you can see exhibits introducing the history of Antarctic observation and the Fuji's activities. You can also tour the ship's interior, getting a glimpse into the lives of the crew at the time. This experience brings you up close and personal with the world of Antarctica, and is recommended for elementary school-aged children.
A support helicopter (S-61A) is on display on the outdoor flight deck. From the deck, you can enjoy panoramic views of Nagoya Port and the Ferris wheel. The harbor is photogenic during the day, and the illuminations at night are photogenic. It's a perfect half-day trip, combining it with the adjacent Nagoya Port Port Building (Observation Deck and Maritime Museum) and Nagoya Port Aquarium.
