This open-air museum is set on the ruins of the castle town of the Sengoku daimyo Asakura. It is a staple of Fukui tourism, where you can learn about the restored townscape and the latest museum, and experience the gardens and panoramic views that are designated as special scenic spots.
The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins are the remains of a huge Sengoku period city spanning approximately 4km across a valley. Excavations have revealed the remains of the castle town's streets and residences, and the area's core, the "Restored Townscape," brings to life the townhouses and samurai residences of the time. As you walk, the stone pavements and waterway layouts are recreated in three dimensions, providing an immersive experience of everyday life in the Sengoku period. The beautiful contrast between the mountains and the countryside makes it a popular spot for photographers.

Japan's oldest flower beds and relics of the Asakura clan have also been discovered at the ruins.
The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins are rare in Japan, as they have preserved the appearance of a castle town from the Sengoku period in nearly perfect condition.
In the restored townscape of the ruins, you can actually see the remains of the Asakura clan's castle, samurai residences, temples, townhouses, and more.

The Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins Museum, due to open in 2022, will offer a bird's-eye view of the "100 years of the Asakura clan" through permanent and interactive exhibits that reflect the latest research. While efforts are underway to preserve and open to the public the ruins, four of the gardens, including the remains of Suwa-yakata and the bathhouse, have been designated as Special Places of Scenic Beauty by the national government. The entire ruins are a Special Historic Site, and are a rare cultural landscape with triple designations: "Special Historic Site + Special Place of Scenic Beauty + Important Cultural Property" in Japan.
