This famous temple in Sasaguri is known for one of the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha statues. It is easily accessible, just a three-minute walk from the station, and is a staple of Fukuoka tourism, where you can pray and learn by strolling around the temple grounds and worshiping inside the temple.
Nanzoin is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect and the first temple of the Sasaguri Shikoku Pilgrimage. Its iconic Nirvana Statue, one of the largest in the world at 41 meters long, 11 meters tall, and weighing approximately 300 tons, is a stunning sight, lying on the mountainside. Touring the halls and stone Buddha statues scattered along the approach to the temple will soothe your soul in the tranquility. For photographers, we recommend a wide-angle shot from a distance that captures the entire statue.

Inside the statue, there is a space to enshrine the Buddha's relics, as well as a sand-stepping area representing the 88 temples of Shikoku, allowing visitors to experience a walking pilgrimage. After offering a goma stick and completing the internal worship (fees apply), you can also visit the Women's Amaterasu Hall and the Great Acala on the temple grounds.

The nearest station is Kido Nanzoin-mae Station on the JR Fukuhoku-Yutaka Line, about a 3-minute walk away. It's about 30 minutes by car from central Fukuoka and about 15 minutes from Fukuoka Interchange, making it an easy stop. It's also a great place to combine a half-day trip with sightseeing in Dazaifu or Hakata.

[Trivia]
It's also famous for the story of how the head priest of Nanzoin Temple, Hayashi, won the first prize of 130 million yen in the Jumbo Lottery.
