This small aquarium is a place where you can learn about the ocean around the Kii Peninsula. It has a rich display of about 500 species, especially invertebrates, and detailed explanations directly from the research institute, making it a popular little-known spot for tourists in Shirahama.
Shirahama Aquarium, an academic aquarium attached to Kyoto University's Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, boasts one of Japan's largest collections of invertebrates, including corals, shrimp, crabs, and starfish. Along with the fish native to the southern Kii Sea, the aquarium offers a life-size view of the Shirahama Sea itself. Approximately 500 species of creatures, including crabs, starfish, and giant trevally, are on permanent display.

Highlights include the solar aquarium, which captures natural light, a 250-ton tank, and an area where visitors can observe the shapes and movements of sea creatures up close. During spring, summer, and winter holidays, guided tours led by researchers and keepers, backstage tours, and feeding experiences are also available, providing educational experiences for children and adults alike.

The aquarium has few steps, and flash photography is permitted. Observation and photography enthusiasts will appreciate the in-depth exhibits.

Its compact design, typical of the port town of Shirahama, makes it easy to combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area.
