Like Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture, this shrine has an impressive large torii gate floating on Lake Biwa, and is also called 'Omi's Itsukushima.'
The principal object of worship is Sarutahiko no Mikoto. It is said to be the head shrine of all Shirahige shrines in Japan and the oldest shrine in Omi.

The enshrined deity, Sarutahiko no Mikoto, is the deity who guided Ninigi no Mikoto, an incarnation of Amaterasu Omikami, during the descent of the sun goddess. He is said to have divine virtues such as longevity, marriage, child-bearing, good luck, academic achievement, traffic safety, and voyage safety.
