Shirakawa-go is a historic village in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, known for its unique gassho-zukuri houses and beautiful seasonal scenery.

The most distinctive feature of Shirakawa-go is the Gassho-style houses. The gassho-zukuri style uses heavy wood and has a large, steeply sloping roof, which is typical of snowy areas. The shape of the roof prevents snow from accumulating, and also plays a role in effectively escaping smoke when using fires inside the house.

In 1995, Shirakawa-go was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique scenery and historical architecture. The traditional way of life, the technology and functionality of Gassho-zukuri, and the beautiful seasonal scenery were recognized as having international value.

Shirakawa-go is crowded with many tourists throughout the year. In particular, the snowy landscape in winter and the atmospheric landscape created by the gassho-zukuri houses are highly regarded as superb views. In spring, summer, and autumn, you can enjoy the beauty of the Japanese countryside, such as fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and harvest scenery.

Shirakawa-go is a place where you can experience the lifestyle and construction techniques that have been passed down through the generations in a landscape that combines Japanese tradition and nature. It is highly recognized as a World Heritage Site and is a tourist destination that represents Japan and attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad.
