Designed by Kenzo Tange, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is popular for its free observation deck on the 45th floor. It is a Tokyo landmark that offers a panoramic view from Shinjuku to Mt. Fuji.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, towering over Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, is a representative example of Japanese modernist architecture, designed by world-famous architect Kenzo Tange. In particular, its majestic exterior is said to be modeled after Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and its overwhelming presence has made it a landmark of the Shinjuku subcenter. The observation deck on the 45th floor, which is open to the public, offers a 360-degree view of Tokyo's cityscape stretching from north to south and east to west, making it a popular spot visited by many tourists.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which features the twin towers of the First Main Building, is not only tall, but also embodies Kenzo Tange's architectural philosophy everywhere. From the observation deck, you can see as far as Mt. Fuji in the daytime, and at night, the night view of Tokyo, which looks like it is studded with jewels, spreads out below you, captivating visitors. In addition, a cafe and shop will be opened in the North Observatory, and a souvenir shop called "TOKYO Mikke!", which promotes the charms of Tokyo, will be reopened in the South Observatory on April 23, 2025, allowing you to enjoy an even more fulfilling stay.

It is within walking distance of Shinjuku Station and is very convenient to access. It is very popular with foreign tourists because you can easily stop by and enjoy the spectacular view for free when sightseeing in Tokyo. The beauty of the architecture and the view of Tokyo from there will provide visitors with inspiration and discoveries, and will add color to your memories of Tokyo.

[Trivia]
When it was completed (1991), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building was the tallest building in Japan. It was also the last skyscraper designed by Kenzo Tange. The South and North Observatories have different closing days, so it is recommended to check in advance before visiting.
