Tenneiji Temple is an ancient temple associated with the Ashikaga Shogunate, and its three-story pagoda is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The view of Onomichi from the top of the pagoda is magnificent.
Tenneiji is an ancient temple of the Soto sect that is said to have been founded by Fumyo Kokushi in 1367 with a donation from Yoshiakira Ashikaga, the second shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. It is one of the temples that represent Onomichi and is included in the Onomichi Seven Buddhas Tour. It has high historical value and is rich in things to see.

The most eye-catching feature in the temple grounds is the three-story pagoda Kaiuntou, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The beautiful vermilion-painted pagoda creates a picturesque scene with the blue sky and sea of Onomichi in the background, and many tourists take photos of it. This pagoda was originally planned as a five-story pagoda, but it is said that the top two stories were removed to give it its current shape.

In addition, in the Rakan Hall to the left of the main hall, a group of 500 Rakan statues with unique expressions are lined up in a row, overwhelming the viewer.

On some days of the week, you can experience zazen early in the morning (reservations required).
