Mitsugi Hachiman Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, with a history dating back to the Heian period. It is particularly famous for its weeping cherry blossoms in spring, and is known as the "Yoshino of the West" for their beauty, attracting many people. Within the shrine grounds, there are about 150 weeping cherry trees in full bloom, including an ancient tree that is over 200 years old, and their graceful appearance captures the hearts of visitors. During cherry blossom season, the contrast with the vermilion shrine building is beautiful, creating a truly picturesque view.
There are various varieties of weeping cherry trees at Mitsugi Hachiman Shrine, from early to late blooming, and they are best viewed from late March to early April. A particular highlight is the tunnel of weeping cherry trees that cover the approach to the main shrine. The pale pink flowers swaying in the wind create an elegant and fantastic atmosphere, captivating visitors. The cherry trees in the shrine grounds are also rich in history, including a stump (now dead) that is said to have been planted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi when he visited the tree while staying at Mihara Castle.

During the cherry blossom season, the shrine is lit up at night, allowing you to enjoy a fantastic night view of the cherry trees, which is different from the daytime view. The vermilion shrine and torii gates emerge from the dark night, and the weeping cherry trees are illuminated by soft light, creating a breathtaking beauty. It is also known as a great spot for photography enthusiasts, and many people visit to capture the spectacular view on camera. In addition to the cherry blossoms, the **shrine groves** surrounding the shrine grounds are designated as a prefectural natural monument, allowing visitors to experience the rich natural environment throughout the year.

Mitocho Hachiman Shrine is a place of great historical value, not only for its cherry blossoms, but also as a place associated with Wake no Kiyomaro. It once flourished as the shrine that protected the entire Bingo region, and is home to many treasures, including wooden guardian lions and old woodblock prints that are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the nation. Mitocho Hachiman Shrine, where history, nature, and the scenery of the especially beautiful weeping cherry blossoms come together, is a special place that is definitely worth a visit if you are visiting Hiroshima in the spring.
