It is a famous observation deck that is said to be the best in the Orient and is one of Japan's most famous, with ties to the Japanese Navy and other organizations, and is said to have high historical value.
The area around the lighthouse is part of Daisen-Oki National Park, and has many attractive natural features, such as cliffs and unique rock formations.
From the bird watching platform and observation deck near the lighthouse, you can get a close-up look at Fumishima Island, which is a national natural monument designated as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls.
There are no fences on the cliffs, so your legs will freeze when you get close. It's just like a cliff in a suspense drama.
[Trivia]
- Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse was registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2013.
- The first-class Fresnel lens used in the lighthouse is made in France, and its light is said to reach up to 40 km away.
- Fumishima is a columnar jointed island known as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls.
[Hidden spot information]
There are promenades around the lighthouse, and you can stroll along the coastline lined with strange rocks and cliffs (the so-called "Izumo Matsushima" area). Especially at dusk, the contrast between the lighthouse and the sunset over the cliffs is spectacular, attracting visitors. Also, from the bird watching platform just below the lighthouse, you can get a close-up look at the flocks of black-tailed gulls, including Kyojima, and from spring to summer you can even take photos of the egg-laying and child-rearing.
Free
To visit the inside of the lighthouse, a donation-based admission fee is required, 300 yen for junior high school students and above, and free for elementary school students and younger and people with disabilities (up to one caregiver).
