This Rinzai sect temple is surrounded by the tranquility of Kita-Kamakura. It is an ancient temple where you can feel the spirit of Zen, with its national treasure-class temple buildings and abundant nature.
Engakuji Temple is the head temple of the Engakuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, ranked second among the Five Mountains of Kamakura. It was founded by Hojo Tokimune in 1282 to mourn those who died in the Mongol invasion. The temple grounds are a nationally designated historic site, and there are many things to see, such as the magnificent mountain gate, the Buddha hall, and the national treasure, the Ogane Bell. The layout makes use of the deep valley topography, and the temple is in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings.

The temple is especially famous for its autumn leaves, with the trees dyed fiery red and gold, coloring the historic temple buildings. The temple's beautiful seasonal expressions, from the fresh green of spring, the deep green of summer, and the snowy landscape of winter, bring peace to visitors. Zen meditation sessions and sutra copying sessions are also held regularly, allowing visitors to experience the spirit of Zen in a unique way.

Its easy access from Kita-Kamakura Station is also an attractive feature, attracting many tourists, but the temple grounds are large and there are many quiet areas, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll.
