This historical park was built on the ruins of an impregnable castle that was the residence of the Sanada clan and twice repelled the Tokugawa army. It is also popular for its beautiful turret gates and stone walls, as well as for its Senbonzakura cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.
Ueda Castle Ruins Park is a historical park developed on the site of Ueda Castle, which was built by Sanada Masayuki and his son Yukimura during the Sengoku period and is famous for being an impregnable castle that repelled the Tokugawa army twice. The castle tower no longer remains, but the stone walls and moats that convey the appearance of the time have been well preserved, giving a sense of historical romance.

The symbol of the park is the reconstructed Higashikoguchi Yaguramon Gate and the two adjacent turrets. In particular, the Sanada stones that appear when you pass through the turret gate and the cleverly arranged stone walls speak of the high level of Sanada's castle building skills and the solid defense that plagued the Tokugawa army. These are important relics that convey the historical value of the castle to the present day.

The grounds also include Sanada Shrine, which enshrines the Sanada clan, and Ueda City Museum, where you can learn about the history of Ueda, which you can enjoy along with a stroll around the castle ruins. The scenery changes with the seasons, with Senbonzakura cherry blossoms in spring and beautiful autumn leaves in autumn. It is close to Ueda city and is an ideal base for sightseeing.
