Osu Kannon is a sacred place of Kannon worship that is said to be one of the three major Kannon temples in Japan. It is an iconic ancient temple located at the starting point of the Osu shopping district.
Osu Kannon, officially called Shinpukuji Hoshoin, is a temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism. It was relocated from Kuwabara-cho, Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture, and built in its current location in Osu, Naka Ward, Nagoya City. Although it is located in the center of Nagoya, you will be enveloped in a solemn atmosphere as soon as you step inside. The principal image is the Bodhisattva Shokannon, which is said to have the power to ward off evil and bring good fortune, and it attracts not only locals but also many tourists to worship.

It houses a statue of Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Nagoya.

Osu Kannon is counted as one of the three great Kannon temples in Japan, and it houses the Shinpukuji Bunko, which boasts a collection of about 15,000 books, including the National Treasure Kojiki, which is said to be the oldest copy of the three great Kannon temples. It is a temple of great historical and academic value.

There are many pigeons on the grounds, and you can feed them, making it popular with children. It is located at the entrance to the lively Osu Shopping Arcade, so you can enjoy shopping and eating your way through the arcade before or after your visit. It is a symbol of the Osu area, where old history and new culture mix together.

The surrounding Osu Shopping Arcade was once known as one of Japan's three major electronics districts and a second-hand clothing town, but today it is also a popular area for its many other gourmet spots.
