Hakuto Beach in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, is known nationwide as the setting for the myth "The White Rabbit of Inaba," which is recorded in the Kojiki. The contrast between the arching white sand beach and the emerald green Sea of Japan is beautiful, and it is a popular spot to visit, along with Hakuto Shrine, which is located just west of the coast.
Okinoshima Island, located about 150m offshore from Shirato Beach, is a rocky island where in mythology, a white rabbit tried to trick a crocodile shark to cross. The black reefs that stretch from the coast to the island look like the back of a crocodile shark, making the world of the Kojiki feel real. This mysterious landscape is also popular with photography enthusiasts. In the summer, it is a popular swimming beach, but the waves are calm and there are no facilities for marine sports.

On the east side of the coast, there is a colony of rosehips, which is said to be the southernmost natural habitat of the Japanese rose, and it is designated as a national natural monument. Pale pink flowers bloom every year from mid-May to mid-June, and their sweet fragrance welcomes visitors.

Shirato Beach has also been certified as a "sacred place for lovers," and at Shirato Hill overlooking the sea, there is a photo spot with a love bell and a photo stand. At the neighboring Shirato Shrine, you can experience the legend of purification in a pond called Mitarai-ike, and enjoy the beautiful scenery while experiencing the world of myth.

[Trivia]
In myth, a rabbit heals its wounds by washing them in the fresh water of Mitarai-ike.

The black reef between Okinoshima and the coast is actually called "Wanizame no Se" (the back of a crocodile shark), following the description in the Kojiki.
