Mt. Hakodate is 334m above sea level, and you can see the city of Hakodate from the top of the mountain. It is one of the three major night views in Japan and a standard date spot in Hakodate.
Mt. Hakodate was developed as a fortress during the Meiji period, and a gun battery was installed on the summit. It was opened to the public in 1953, and now you can access the summit by ropeway.
The Mt. Hakodate Observatory is a three-story building, and from the rooftop observation deck on the top floor you can get a panoramic view of Hakodate city between Hakodate Bay and the Tsugaru Strait. On a clear day, it is said that you can see all the way to the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori.
It takes about an hour to climb Mt. Hakodate at a leisurely pace on foot.
There is a free parking lot for climbers in front of the Mt. Hakodate Management Office.
There is a parking lot at the summit of Mt. Hakodate, but general vehicles are not allowed and only taxis or buses are available.
