It is one of the tenmangu shrines that enshrine Sugawara no Michizane as a deity.
Sugawara no Michizane was a court noble in the Heian period who excelled in academics and politics. However, he lost the power struggle and was demoted to Dazaifu, where he died. After his death, he was revered as Tenjin-sama and worshiped as the god of learning.

Dazaifu Tenmangu is worshiped not only as the god of learning, but also as the god of plum blossoms. Approximately 10,000 plum trees are planted within the grounds, and many people visit from late February to early March every year as a famous spot for plum blossoms.
