This is the Ichinomiya Shrine of Chikuzen Province, located in Fukuoka City. It is one of the three major Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan, and is an ancient shrine that is worshipped as the god of safe voyages, good fortune, and matchmaking.
Chikuzen Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine is located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, and is one of the "Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines of Japan" that enshrines the Sumiyoshi Sanjin (three gods) among the approximately 2,100 Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan (the others are Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki). According to the shrine's legend, it is a very historic shrine that was founded when Empress Jingu received a divine oracle here on her way back from the conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea and enshrined the Sumiyoshi Sanjin. Since ancient times, it has attracted a wide range of faiths as a god of safe voyages and the guardian deity of the sea, as well as good luck, prosperity in business, and matchmaking.

Although the grounds are located in the center of the city, they are surrounded by a dense, sacred forest, giving off a solemn atmosphere. Particularly eye-catching is the main hall, which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The linear, simple architectural style known as Sumiyoshi-zukuri is considered one of the oldest shrine architectural styles in Japan, and still conveys an ancient style that rivals that of Ise Grand Shrine and Izumo Taisha Shrine. Standing in front of this main hall, you can feel a unique and solemn atmosphere.

Sumiyoshi Shrine is also known as the shrine for the god of sumo, and within the grounds you can see statues of sumo wrestlers and "chikaraishi" (power stones) that are said to bring good luck when touched. Every January, the "Hatsubasho Success Prayer Festival" is held, and sumo wrestlers come to pray.
