This castle was built by Kuroda Nagamasa, who distinguished himself in the Battle of Sekigahara in the early Edo period. It has been selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous castles.
Fukuoka Castle is located in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, and was built by Kuroda Nagamasa, the feudal lord of Fukuoka, during the Edo period. It once boasted a vast site, but now the castle tower no longer exists, and only its stone walls, moat, and several turrets remain. However, these remains are designated as national historic sites, and convey the grandeur of the castle from the past. In particular, the high stone walls are beautifully stacked, and the high level of craftsmanship is astonishing. The entire castle ruins have been developed as "Maizuru Park," and are a popular place for citizens to relax.

The Fukuoka Castle ruins are also a place where you can enjoy the beautiful nature of the four seasons. In spring, about 1,000 cherry trees bloom, making it one of Fukuoka's most famous cherry blossom spots, and it is crowded with many cherry blossom viewers. During the cherry blossom season, the area is lit up, so you can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms at night.

[Trivia]
The name of the place was changed to "Fukuoka" from Fukuoka in Bizen Province (present-day Okayama Prefecture), which is a place associated with the Kuroda family.

Fukuoka Castle was built on a flatland mountain and was a sturdy castle with extensive stone walls.
The prevailing theory is that Fukuoka Castle avoided Ieyasu's restrictions by building only a castle tower base instead of a castle tower, but there are also theories that it did have a castle tower.

[Hidden gem]
The Korokan Ruins Exhibition Hall is an archaeological museum located in Maizuru Park in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. The results of the excavation of the Heian period guest house "Korokan" are exhibited along with life-size foundation stones, a reconstructed model, and excavated items. It provides easy-to-understand explanations of the international exchange of the time and the history of the Japanese envoys' shipping routes, making it a place of learning that is free to visit.
