Amanoiwato Shrine is a shrine located in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, and is the setting for the Amanoiwato myth. It is a mysterious shrine that pays homage to the sacred cave where Amaterasu Omikami is said to have hidden.
The cave where Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in the cave is enshrined as the object of worship.

Amanoiwato Shrine has two main shrines, Nishi-Hongu and Higashi-Hongu. Nishi-Hongu is located at the entrance to the cave and is said to be the place where Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in the cave. Higashi-Hongu is located deep inside the cave and is said to be the place where Amaterasu Omikami emerged after hiding.

The main benefits of Amanoiwato Shrine are good luck, protection from evil, matchmaking, luck in business, and improvement in the arts. Nishi-Hongu in particular enshrines Amaterasu Omikami and is said to bring good luck, protection from evil, and luck in business. Higashi-Hongu is also said to be the place where Amaterasu Omikami first lived and is also said to bring good luck and protection from evil.

[Hidden gem]
The nearby (10-minute drive) Aratachi Shrine, which enshrines Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, is known as the goddess of matchmaking and the arts. In particular, the two gods Sarutahiko and Ame-no-Uzume are enshrined here, and the two are popular as a shrine for matchmaking due to their marital harmony. Ame-no-Uzume is also the god of performing arts, so many people visit the shrine to pray for improvement in their arts and success in their performing arts activities.
