This 88m waterfall on Yakushima Island has been selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls. Its spectacular scenery, surrounded by magnificent nature, is a highlight. You can feel the spray of the water up close at the base of the falls.
Okawa Falls is located in the southwest of Yakushima, about a 10-minute drive from Kuryu Village along the Western Forest Road. There is a well-maintained promenade from Kuryu Village to the waterfall, and it is wheelchair accessible.
Okawa Falls is located where the Okawa River flows down from the foot of Miyanoura-dake Mountain, forming a sheer cliff. The 88-meter waterfall has a large amount of water and is very impressive. You can go up to the base of the waterfall and feel the spectacular water spray up close.
In particular, when the water volume increases after rain, the entire waterfall basin is enveloped in mist, making it even more impressive. The area around the waterfall is covered in the deep subtropical green of Yakushima, and the contrast between the white and green of the waterfall is very beautiful.
The biggest attraction is that you can get very close to the base of the waterfall and experience the rising water spray and roaring sound up close. You can be surrounded by cool air even in midsummer and enjoy plenty of negative ions. The area around the falls is dotted with huge rocks, creating a unique landscape, and along with the purity of the water, you can enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of Yakushima.
Okonotaki Falls is one of Yakushima's main tourist spots, but it is relatively easy to access, so even families and those who are not accustomed to trekking can easily visit.
