Kurokawa Onsen, located in Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, is one of the most popular hot spring resorts in Japan, surrounded by abundant nature. It is a popular hot spring resort where you can enjoy touring the quaint open-air baths.
Kurokawa Onsen is a popular hot spring resort located in Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, that stretches for about 1.6 kilometers along the Tanohara River, a tributary of the Chikugo River. It is surrounded by the lush nature of the outer rim of Mount Aso, and the townscape lined with stone-paved alleys and quaint shops has an attractive, nostalgic atmosphere that evokes the original scenery of Japan. There are various types of springs, with seven types of springs including "simple springs (weakly acidic)" and "sulfur springs." They are said to be "beautiful skin baths" that are gentle on the skin, and are effective for treating cuts, neuralgia, and fatigue.
The greatest attraction of Kurokawa Onsen is the many open-air baths that each inn has elaborately designed. Each has its own unique charm, such as a rock bath that makes use of the natural terrain, a private bath surrounded by forest, and an open-air bath where you can bathe while listening to the murmuring of the river.
It is especially popular to visit the open-air baths using the "bath pass," which can be used by day-trippers as well as overnight guests.
By purchasing a "bath pass" (1,500 yen each), you can freely visit three open-air baths at 24 participating inns. Strolling around the hot spring town in a yukata and clattering geta sandals, and bathing in a variety of unique open-air baths, is an experience that is unique to Kurokawa Onsen.
The hot spring town is dotted with restaurants and souvenir shops, where you can enjoy dishes made with local ingredients and local specialties such as hot spring manju. There is also a walking path along the river, where you can enjoy nature while listening to the soothing sound of the water. This hot spring resort is recommended for those who want to relax both body and mind away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and for those who want to stroll through a charming hot spring town.
