Daikanbo Observatory in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is the best view spot in Aso, where you can see the five peaks of Mt. Aso and the caldera all at once. It is also famous for the beauty of the sea of clouds and sunsets.
Daikanbo Observatory is located on the highest peak (936m above sea level) of the northern outer rim of Aso Mountain in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is an observation spot that symbolizes the majestic nature of Aso. Below you can see the five peaks of Aso lying down like reclining Buddha statues and the vast Aso caldera, and the scale of the view is overwhelming. It is also known as part of the Aso Panorama Line, and is a popular destination for driving and touring. In particular, if the conditions are right in the early morning, you can see a fantastic sea of clouds filling the caldera, and its beauty attracts many people.

The view from Daikanbo shows various expressions depending on the time of day and season. During the day, the lush grassland and the majestic appearance of the five peaks of Aso spread out under the blue sky, and you will feel a sense of openness. At dusk, the setting sun paints the caldera orange, creating a romantic atmosphere. At night, the sky is filled with stars, and it is also known as a spot for astronomical observation. From autumn to winter, you can enjoy the spectacular view of Aso enveloped in a sea of clouds. This is a place where you can feel the beauty of nature in every season.

The observation point has a spacious lawn area, a rest area, a souvenir shop, a cafe, and more, so you can spend your time relaxing and enjoying the view. This is a recommended spot for those who want to feel the grandeur of Aso and refresh both body and mind.

[Hidden Spot]
The main observation point is popular, but the surrounding spots such as "Kusasenri-ga-hama" and "Yonezuka", which are located a little further away, are also hidden spots where you can enjoy the view of Aso from different angles. In particular, at Kusasenri-ga-hama, you can see the idyllic scenery of grazing cows and horses grazing, which is a different kind of healing from Daikanbo. If you are aiming for the sea of clouds in the early morning, it is recommended to go before dawn when there are still few people.

[Useful points of concern]
Daikanbo is at a high altitude, so it is cool even in summer, but it can get cold in the mornings and evenings. Please take proper measures against the cold, especially when observing the sea of clouds in the early morning and in winter. There are many windy days. In winter, access roads (such as Milk Road) may be closed due to snow accumulation or frozen roads, so please check road conditions in advance.
