Located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Tochoji Temple is said to be the first Shingon esoteric Buddhist temple built in Japan in 806 by Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is said that Kukai, who returned from China (Tang Dynasty), founded the temple to pray for the eastward spread of esoteric Buddhism, and it boasts a long history and prestige as "Japan's first sacred place for the eastward spread of esoteric Buddhism." Although it is located in the center of Fukuoka City, the temple grounds are enveloped in a quiet and solemn atmosphere, making it a power spot that helps you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

The biggest attraction of this temple is the "Fukuoka Great Buddha" enshrined in the main hall. It is one of the largest wooden seated statues in Japan, standing 10.8 meters tall and weighing 30 tons. Its overwhelming presence and serene expression attract viewers. Inside the base of the Great Buddha, there is a passage called "Hell and Paradise Tour," where you can experience the appearance of hell and the light of paradise by walking through the darkness. The temple grounds also have a lot to see, including the hexagonal hall "Rokkakudo," which is said to bring good fortune when rotated.

The Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva statue in the main hall is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
