Shuri Castle is a royal castle in Nakayama, the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
Shuri Castle was founded in the 14th century and served as the political, economic and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom until the early 19th century. From the 14th to the 19th century, the castle and buildings were repeatedly burned or destroyed due to repeated fires and wars, but restoration work began in 1910 and was completed in 1925.
Shuri Castle was built in the Gusuku style, a unique Ryukyu architectural style. It is characterized by its curved stone walls and vermilion-colored buildings.
