Located at the southernmost tip of Muroran City, this cape offers a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. You can really feel the roundness of the earth, and the impressive view has earned it the spotlight as one of Hokkaido's "100 Natural Wonders."
Cape Chikyu is a cliff-like cape about 100 meters high that juts out into the Pacific Ocean, located at the tip of the Etomo Peninsula in Muroran City, Hokkaido. As its name suggests, from the observation deck you can clearly see the majestic Pacific Ocean spreading out below you and the horizon forming a gentle arc, giving you a real sense of the roundness of the Earth, hence the name. The beauty of the scenery is well-known, and it is a scenic spot that represents Muroran, attracting many tourists, as it was selected as the number one natural wonder of Hokkaido in 2004.
At the tip of the cape stands the beautiful white lighthouse "Cape Chikyu Lighthouse," as well as the Bell of Happiness and an observation deck, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent view to your heart's content. Especially on sunny days, the contrast between the blue sky and the blue sea is vivid, and it is full of a sense of openness. In the early morning, the sun rising from the horizon is beautiful, and at dusk, the sky and sea are dyed a romantic crimson color, spreading out before you. You may see ships passing by on the sea, and if you're lucky, you may even see dolphins or whales.
On New Year's Day, the place is crowded with locals and tourists from far away who come to watch the first sunrise of the year.
