A townhouse from the Meiji period remains in the old townscape of Hida Takayama. With its magnificent beams, open ceiling, and intricate lattice windows, it is a valuable building that conveys the skills of Hida craftsmen to the present day.
The Yoshijima Family House is located in the old town of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, and was built in the Meiji era as the residence of the Yoshijima family, a sake brewery. It has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and is known as a valuable building that conveys the lifestyle of wealthy merchants at that time. The exterior blends in with the surrounding townscape with its bay windows and earthen walls, which are unique to Takayama, but once you step inside, you will be overwhelmed by its spaciousness and the dynamic space with its magnificent beams running vertically and horizontally. The spatial composition, which skillfully uses light and shadow, is also beautiful, and you can experience the excellent architectural skills of the Hida craftsmen up close.

The great appeal of this house is its open space and craftsmanship that pays attention to every detail. The large atrium that can be seen from the dirt floor brings light into the center of the house, as if it has been watching over the family's life with warmth. In addition, from the tatami room and living room, you can view the beautiful garden, which changes with the seasons, creating a relaxing space where the building and nature are one. Each room is fitted out with furnishings and daily necessities from that time, allowing visitors to imagine the prosperous lifestyle of the Meiji period.

The Yoshijima Family Residence is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a valuable place where you can learn about traditional Japanese architecture and the lifestyles of people at that time.
