This flat castle in Shizuoka City was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1585 and is one of the 100 most famous castles in Japan. The ruins of the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years are now maintained as Sunpu Castle Park, where you can feel the history, nature, and Ieyasu's footsteps.
Sunpu Castle is located in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is known as the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years as a shogun from the Sengoku period to the Edo period. Ieyasu continued to govern in this area even after retirement, and Sunpu became the political and cultural center of Japan second only to Edo.

Sunpu Castle is one of the largest flat castles in Japan, surrounded by three moats and earthworks: Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru. The castle tower base was the largest in the history of castles, measuring approximately 55m x 48m at the top of the stone wall. There is no castle tower at present.

It is currently maintained as "Sunpu Castle Park" and is a popular place of relaxation for citizens. Within the park, you can enjoy history and nature at the same time with the restored "Higashi-Mikomon/Tatsumi Tower" and "Kun Tower," as well as the beautiful garden "Momijiyama Garden."

The greatest attraction of this castle park is that it is a place associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and you can feel its historical weight. The restored buildings faithfully reproduce the architectural style of the time, allowing you to imagine the structure of the castle and what it was like inside. There are also information boards in various places in the park about Ieyasu's life and the history of Sunpu Castle, so you can learn about history as you stroll around. In particular, Momijiyama Garden is a stroll-style garden where you can enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the seasons, and is a relaxing space.

There is no parking lot, so you will need to use the "Citizens' Cultural Center Parking Lot (paid)" or other parking lots.
