The Nageiredo Hall of Mitoku-san Sanbutsu-ji Temple is a rare piece of architecture worldwide, believed to have been built in the late Heian period. Built into the middle of a nearly vertical cliff, its construction method remains a mystery even today. It was given the name "Nageiredo" due to its appearance as if it had been thrown into the ground, and it has been designated a national treasure.
To visit the Ippei-do, you have to climb the steep mountain path called "Gyojamichi" from the entrance next to the main hall for about an hour. There are steep slopes with exposed tree roots and places where you have to climb rock walls using chains, so it is strictly prohibited to enter the mountain in light clothing. Please prepare comfortable clothes, hiking shoes with non-slip pads, and a backpack that leaves your hands free, and register at the climbing office on the day before starting the climb.
Small resting halls and stone Buddha statues are scattered along the way, and after about an hour's walk, the Ippei-do, which seems to be attached to the rock wall, will appear. Although you cannot stand directly under it, you can see the whole view from the "Yohai-jo" (remote worship site) up close, and you will be overwhelmed by its mysterious appearance.

As for the construction method of the Ippei-do, while the legend that "En no Gyoja threw it in with his spiritual power" is passed down, it is also thought to be the result of ancient civil engineering techniques that combined meticulous stone and wooden construction. The landscape of the cliffs and the deep green of the surrounding cedar and cypress trees is full of the majesty that only a sacred place of faith can have. After the climb, you can relax in the Misasa Onsen at the foot of the mountain, so you can enjoy an experience that combines ascetic practice and healing.
