Mizuki Shigeru Road in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture, is a unique shopping street lined with 178 bronze statues of monsters, located in the hometown of Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of the popular manga Gegege no Kitaro. During the day, you can take commemorative photos with the monsters, and at night, the area is enveloped in a fantastical atmosphere with illuminations and shadow puppets. At the center of the street, the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum, you can learn about Mizuki's life and works, as well as his deep desire to explore monsters, and fully experience the world of Mizuki.
The biggest attraction of Mizuki Shigeru Road is the bronze statues of unique monsters scattered along the road that stretches for about 800 meters from Sakaiminato Station to the memorial museum. In addition to familiar characters such as Kitaro, Medama Oyaji, and Nezumio, various monsters from all over Japan welcome you as if they are part of your daily life. The "Monster Stamp Rally" (paid), in which you search for the statues while reading the explanation boards of the monsters, is a popular activity that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Many stores sell goods and sweets with a monster motif, so it's fun to look for souvenirs that you can only get here.

Mizuki Shigeru Road at night shows a fantastical look that is different from the daytime. Shadow pictures of monsters are projected onto the street lamps and walls of buildings, and together with the illuminated bronze statues, it creates a mysterious atmosphere that is different from the daytime. To be honest, you can have a completely different experience during the day and at night, so if possible, we strongly recommend visiting both times of the day and night. The shadow pictures are especially beautiful and photogenic after sunset, so it's a good idea to stroll around with a camera in hand. There are plenty of things to see on the road, such as the Yokai Shrine and Yokai Postbox, so you'll never get bored.

The Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum is located in the center of Mizuki Shigeru Road, and is a place where you can learn more about Mizuki's life and the world of his work, from his upbringing to his war experiences, his achievements as a yokai researcher, and the original drawings of his manga works. Inside the museum, impressive yokai objects, dioramas, videos, and more are on display, allowing you to experience the charm of Mizuki's world with all five senses. After renovations, the exhibits have been further enhanced, and not only yokai fans but also those who are not will be able to experience Mizuki's unique perspective and his love for yokai.
