The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace was built by the Hagi Domain in 1856 to cast Western-style iron cannons. A reverberatory furnace is a furnace for producing high-quality iron by melting pig iron (which contains many impurities) directly from iron ore. The Hagi reverberatory furnace was built based on the sketches of the reverberatory furnaces of the Saga clan.

Part of the chimney of the Hagi reverberatory furnace still exists, and is designated as a national historic site. The chimney is 10.5 meters high, and you can climb the stairs inside. Around the chimney are panels explaining the history and structure of the reverberatory furnace.

The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace is a relic that symbolizes Japan's industrial revolution in the Meiji era, and is an important place to learn about the progress of Japan's modernization.
