Tsushima Shrine is an ancient shrine in Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture, boasting a history of about 1,400 years, and is the head shrine of the approximately 3,000 Tsushima shrines nationwide. The main deity is Takehayasu Susanoo no Mikoto, who has been devoutly worshipped since ancient times as a god who wards off epidemics and misfortune.

During the Sengoku period, Oda Nobunaga revered Tsushima as his "kitchen," Toyotomi Hideyoshi donated a tower gate, and Hideyori also donated a south gate, and the shrine has been protected by successive warlords. The tower gate and south gate, designated Important Cultural Properties, remain within the shrine grounds, conveying the splendor of the time to the present.

The Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival, held every year on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of July, is a highlight of the Sharaku Boat Event, where straw-straw boats and Sharaku boats parade along the Tenno River. This event was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016 as the "Yama, Hoko and Yatai Festival." As a traditional event that prays for the elimination of epidemics, it has also been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Visiting the grounds is free, and the shrine office offers goshuin stamps and amulets, as well as prayers for protection from evil. At this shrine, where history and tradition live on, you can experience the depth of Japanese faith and local culture through the cultural assets and festivals associated with military commanders.
