Nakagusuku Castle is a castle that existed during the Ryukyu Kingdom era in the 15th century. It has been selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan.
Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, located in Nakagusuku Village, Okinawa Prefecture, is a mountain castle located on a limestone hill at an elevation of 150-170 meters.
One of the most representative castles (gusuku) from the Ryukyu Dynasty, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom." Nakagusuku Castle Ruins is known as the gusuku that best preserves its original form within Okinawa Prefecture.
A distinctive feature of the castle are its beautifully curved stone walls. Built with advanced craftsmanship, these walls demonstrate the castle's sturdiness and give it an impressive, fortress-like presence. The grounds feature six enclosures, allowing visitors to relive the castle's original structure.
Other relics, such as a horse riding plaza and the remains of a blacksmith's shop, offer insight into life there.
Nakagusuku Castle Ruins' greatest attraction is its beautiful scenery. Located on a hill approximately 160 meters above sea level, the castle offers spectacular views of the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Many tourists visit the park at dusk, especially to enjoy the fantastic view of the beautiful sunset sinking into the sea.
