Hokkaido's largest freshwater fish aquarium. Look down at the Chitose River from Japan's first underwater observation room, and experience salmon swimming upstream in the fall up close. Close to the airport, it's also recommended for family trips and sightseeing on rainy days.
Chitose Aquarium is an educational museum dedicated to the Chitose River and its freshwater creatures. Inside, the museum displays a wide variety of freshwater and aquatic creatures from Hokkaido, including large northern fish like sturgeon and taimen, organized by theme. In Japan's first underwater observation room, you can peer into the river and even sense the flow of the seasons.
The best season is during the upstream migration period from September to October. Schools of salmon fill the observation windows, and in winter, you can even see their spawning behavior. Located adjacent to the roadside station, Salmon Park Chitose, you can enjoy food and souvenirs before or after your visit.
Conveniently located, about a 15-minute drive from the airport and a 15-minute walk from JR Chitose Station, it's also a popular driving destination, about an hour's drive from Sapporo.
