Hanamikoji flourished as Gion's entertainment district during the Edo period, and many geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) frequented the area.

Hanamikoji is Gion's central street, stretching north and south from Shijo Street to Kenninji Temple. The southern side is the most popular area, paved with stone and lined with teahouses and restaurants. Ichiriki Teahouse, with a history of over 300 years, stands on the corner, and at dusk, its lanterns light up the area, creating a truly Kyoto-esque atmosphere. The townscape is a target for landscape preservation, and by burying power lines underground and maintaining the cobblestone streets, the old townhouses have been beautifully preserved.

Hanamikoji is lined with teahouses, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and more, allowing you to experience the quintessential Kyoto atmosphere. During the Gion Festival, Hanamikoji becomes a festival venue and is bustling with people.

Please be mindful of etiquette when strolling along the street. In 2024, some private roads (geisha alleys) in the Gion district will be off-limits to tourists, with a fine of 10,000 yen posted for violations. While the public street Hanamikoji will remain open, be sure to obey signs prohibiting entry to private roads, unauthorized entry, and photography. It is strictly prohibited to photograph maiko and geiko without permission, or to contact or obstruct their path. As this is a quiet residential area, please keep conversations and photography brief at night.
