Its official name is Kongoji Koshindo. Counted as one of Japan's three Koshin temples, it is known as a temple associated with Koshin faith. The round, "Kukurizaru" (tied monkey) ornaments adorning the temple grounds are amulets in the shape of a monkey with its hands and feet tied, symbolizing the teaching of suppressing one desire and entrusting one's wishes to the deity. First, pray at the main hall and offer your "Kukurizaru" with your wish written on it—this prayer ritual, along with the tranquil atmosphere of this small temple, will remain a lasting memory of your trip.
The temple grounds are popular for their photogenic appeal, but this is also a place of faith. Photography should be limited to a short time after prayer, and it is considered good manners to wait in line when it is crowded. There are also other activities, such as receiving goshuin stamps, holding events related to Koshin faith, and the "Konnyaku Prayer" known for curing illnesses, offering more than just a photo spot, offering learning and experiences. This area still retains the charm of its cobblestone streets and traditional townhouses, so combining it with a stroll in a kimono or a stroll around Higashiyama will allow you to fully enjoy the Kyoto atmosphere.
