Kumano Shrine is a place of worship on Mount Hiba. It is a power spot in Shobara that combines sacred grounds with a forest of giant cedars, Nachi Falls, and the trailhead for Mount Ryuo, allowing you to enjoy worship, forest bathing, and light mountain hiking all at once.
Kumano Shrine in Saijo-cho, Shobara City, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Mount Hiba. The grounds are home to over 100 large cedar trees, some over a thousand years old, 11 of which are designated as natural monuments by Hiroshima Prefecture. The towering cedars on both sides of the approach are a stunning sight, creating a tranquil "forest sanctuary."

The shrine is deeply connected to the Hiba Mountain faith, linked to the Kojiki, and has attracted devout reverence as a place dedicated to Izanami. The surrounding area is home to the Kumano Big Horse Chestnut, a national natural monument, and the giant trees standing along the clear stream are a "symbol of the forest."

Kumano Shrine is the main approach to Mount Ryuo (1,256m) in the Hiba Mountain Range. A well-maintained trail leads to the summit, making it easy for even beginners to walk. Along the way, you'll come across Nachi Falls, a waterfall with a drop of approximately 78m, and you can walk along the shady mountain path while listening to the sound of the stream. The climb generally takes just over an hour, with a round trip of two to three hours. The summit offers a gentle grassland with a wide view, offering a sense of accomplishment and a forest bathing experience at the same time.
