Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is one of the three great Tenmangu Shrines of Japan, along with Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto. It was built by Michizane Sugawara, who stayed here on his way to Dazaifu, with his thoughts in mind. It is therefore considered the first Tenmangu Shrine built in Japan, and is deeply revered as the first Tenjin shrine in Japan. There are about 1,100 plum trees, which Michizane loved dearly, planted in the grounds, and they bloom beautifully from late February to early March every year, attracting visitors.

The vast grounds are dotted with many historic buildings, including the main hall. The view of the approach from the large stone steps is particularly impressive, and in spring, a "flower corridor" is set up on the steps, with hundreds of flower pots lined up, creating a magnificent landscape. In addition, the heroic Goshinko Festival (Hadakabo Festival) is held in the autumn, at which many naked men carry bamboo fences and parade through the streets of Hofu. It's a spectacular sight.

The view from Shunpuro is also great.
Be sure to try the Tenjinmochi rice cakes sold at a shop on the approach to the shrine, which have a simple yet delicious taste.

A parking lot is located behind the shrine to the northeast.
