Yushien Garden is one of the largest strolling Japanese gardens in the Sanin region, located on Daikonjima Island in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is a famous garden on Daikonjima Island, home to peonies and ginseng.
Spreading across the heart of Daikon Island, an island in Lake Nakaumi in Izumo Province, Yushien Garden is a strolling Japanese garden with a pond and aquatic features, centered around a water feature and rock formations. With peonies in the spring, irises to the west, shade and waterfalls in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and snow-hanging lanterns in the winter, the garden paints a picturesque picture of the island's four seasons.

The garden was opened in 1870 by Sakae Kadowaki, a wealthy farmer from Daikon Island, with the aim of recreating the scenery of the Izumo region.

The garden boasts an artificial hill modeled after Mt. Daisen, a pond representing the scenic spot "Oni no Shitaburushi," Lake Shinji, and Lake Nakaumi, as well as seasonal flowers in full bloom, including peonies, irises, and autumn leaves.

Approximately 500 peonies are planted here, and the Peony Garden Party is held every year from late April to early May. The garden's most famous attraction is the "ike-botan" (pond peonies) that adorn the entire pond.

The garden features summer illuminations and the "Golden Island Zipangu" illumination, featuring 1.3 million light bulbs, from autumn to winter. The moss, water surface, and Japanese umbrellas floating in the light create a mystical atmosphere, making it a popular night view spot for travelers to Shimane.

Daikon Island has been a ginseng producing area since the Edo period. The garden features a restored long-house gate from the ginseng office, and the processing and cafe corner offers ginseng tea and related souvenirs.

[Trivia]
- "Yushien = The Home of Peonies and Ginseng." The restored "Ginseng Office" tells the history of ginseng cultivation, and you can also enjoy ginseng tea at the garden's cafe.
