The Imanishi Residence is an important cultural property (building) located in Imai-cho, which has been selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture.
Imai-cho flourished as an autonomous city until the end of the Edo period.
Built in 1650 during the early Edo period, the Imanishi Family Residence is the former home of a distinguished family who served as the head of Imaicho's Sotoshiyori (general elders). Its imposing "yatsumune-zukuri" (eight-ridge building) architecture, combining a large ridge and a small ridge with a white plaster exterior, gives it a castle-like appearance overlooking the western edge of the moat. The interior features a spacious dirt floor, six rooms, and a separate corner parlor. It is said that simple court hearings were also held on the ceremonial platform bordering the dirt floor. It is an extremely valuable example of private architecture and has been designated an Important Cultural Property.

Imaicho is known for its historic streets, often referred to as the "Horyuji of Private Houses." The Imanishi family's ancestors were related to the Toichi clan, and they played a key role in local government throughout the Sengoku and early modern periods. Currently, the Imanishi Family Preservation Society maintains and manages the residence, along with its ancient documents and art collections. Interior tours are open to the public by reservation. You can experience the aesthetics of a traditional townhouse, from the shadows cast through the latticework, the texture of the earthen walls and tatami mats, to the garden view from the tatami room.
