In 1995, Shirakawa-go was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique scenery and historical architecture. The traditional way of life, the technology and functionality of Gassho-zukuri, and the beautiful seasonal scenery were recognized as having international value.
Shirakawa-go is crowded with many tourists throughout the year. In particular, the snowy landscape in winter and the atmospheric landscape created by the gassho-zukuri houses are highly regarded as superb views. In spring, summer, and autumn, you can enjoy the beauty of the Japanese countryside, such as fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and harvest scenery.
Shirakawa-go is a place where you can experience the lifestyle and construction techniques that have been passed down through the generations in a landscape that combines Japanese tradition and nature. It is highly recognized as a World Heritage Site and is a tourist destination that represents Japan and attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad.
Access by car is about 2.5 hours from Nagoya and about 1.5 hours from Kanazawa using the expressway.
There are about 10 reservation-based highway buses each day from Kanazawa Station or Takayama Station.
