Daishoin is a Zen Buddhist temple (Rinzai sect) and the family temple of the Mori clan, built in the Edo period. It houses 603 stone lanterns and the grave of the feudal lord.
Daishoin Temple is an ancient Rinzai sect temple that was rebuilt in 1656 as the family temple of the Mori clan. The main hall, bell tower gate, kitchen, study, and sutra repository were all rebuilt in the mid-18th century, and the tranquil temple still retains the dignity of its past. 603 stone lanterns are lined up in an orderly fashion along the approach to the temple. Donated by vassals, they frame the Mori Family Graveyard, a historic site in Okunokuni, in a mysterious and elegant setting.

The graveyard houses the tombs of the first lord, Mori Hidenari, and his wife, along with the even-numbered feudal lords and their wives, while the odd-numbered lords are buried at Tokoji Temple on the opposite bank. This arrangement is based on the ancient Chinese "Zhaomoku system," and the two temples form a pair in Hagi, conveying the funeral customs of early modern daimyo to the present day. During the summer "Hagi Manto-e" festival, welcoming fires are lit at Daishoin Temple (August 13th) and sending off fires are lit at Tokoji Temple (August 15th), creating a magical night of lit stone lanterns.

The Shoromon Gate, Kyozo Sutra Storehouse, and several Buddhist statues have been designated Important Cultural Properties.

Within the temple grounds is the wild wisteria "O-Fuji" (a city-designated cultural property), which grows to a height of approximately 30m. The best time to see it is from late April to early May. The sight of its pale purple color shining against the white walls and evergreen chinquapin forest is a must-see.
