Hagi's Shoin Shrine is home to the Shoka Sonjuku, a World Heritage Site. It is popular for praying for success and collecting temple seals, and is a classic historical tourist spot where you can enjoy a stroll around the grounds, the Treasure Hall, and the Gakushu no Michi (Learning Path) with a great view all at once.
Shoin Shrine, dedicated to Yoshida Shoin, is the birthplace of the Meiji Restoration, where the aspirations of his disciples, including Ito Hirobumi, came to fruition. Within the shrine grounds remains the private school, Shoka Sonjuku (a World Heritage Site), where Shoin taught students of all social classes and ages. A simple study and an eight-tatami-mat hut offer a glimpse into the origins of his "human development."

Preservation of the school is prioritized, so viewing is primarily limited to the exterior, but the interior can also be observed from the side, with the attractive, photogenic texture of the bare wood. The approach to the shrine is lined with offerings such as academic charms and "umbrella fortunes," attracting a constant stream of visitors from test-takers and history buffs.

Shoka Sonjuku was home to many young people who went on to build modern Japan, including Takasugi Shinsaku and Ito Hirobumi. While Shoka Sonjuku is as small as a traditional Japanese house, it's moving to imagine that a new era began here.

This is a recommended power spot for those seeking to harness the power of the patriots of the late Edo period.

If you want to learn more, head to the Shiseikan Treasure House, which houses historical documents and related items. The museum displays Shoin's words and the history of his disciples in an easy-to-understand manner, allowing even first-time visitors to Hagi to get a grasp of the history of the Meiji Restoration.
