The Chofu Castle Town, which spreads out around the Chofu Mori Residence, is an area that retains strong traces of the Edo period. The streets are laid out in a grid pattern and are dotted with samurai residences, merchants, temples and shrines, creating a charming townscape. In particular, there are many historical buildings, such as "Kouzan-ji Temple" and "Imimiya Shrine," and you can follow in the footsteps of the patriots who were active during the turbulent period at the end of the Edo period.
[Trivia]
Chofuku was the base of the Chofu Domain until Mori Terumoto was reduced to his fief and moved his base from Hiroshima to Hagi after the Battle of Sekigahara. The Chofu Mori Family was a different family from the Hagi Mori Family, and played an important role in supporting the Choshu Domain during the late Edo period.
[Hidden Spots]
When you enter the backstreets and alleys of Chofu Castle Town, you will find quiet alleys with few tourists. There, you will find old houses and small gardens that stand quietly, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of the time even more.
However, many of the places inside the walls are just ordinary houses.
[Useful Points of Concern]
Chofuku Castle Town is dotted with historical buildings over a wide area, so it will take time to see everything. It is recommended that you wear comfortable walking shoes. The sun is strong in the summer, so you should take measures against heatstroke. Also, since it is a little far from the main tourist spots, it is practical to check the public transportation connections and car parking places in advance.
