"Indigo House" is a facility where you can learn about the history and culture of Awa indigo. You can experience a deeper understanding of traditional Japanese techniques by viewing beautiful indigo dyeing products and actually experiencing indigo dyeing.
Located in Aizumi-cho, Tokushima Prefecture, Ai no Yakata is a historical building that once housed an indigo merchant. Here, you can learn in depth about the history, manufacturing process, and culture of Awa indigo, a specialty of Tokushima. Inside the museum, indigo leaves, the raw material for indigo dyeing, and materials showing how indigo dye is made are on display, allowing you to understand the role that indigo dyeing has played in Tokushima's economy and culture. You will be able to learn about the diverse beauty of indigo, a traditional Japanese color.

The greatest attraction of Ai no Yakata is that you can actually experience indigo dyeing. You can create your own original indigo-dyed work using various materials such as handkerchiefs and T-shirts. Specialized staff will provide careful instruction, so even beginners can participate with confidence. Since the pattern changes depending on the dyeing method, you can create your own original work.
