Gaya-in is an ancient temple that flourished as the center of Shugendo in the Kansai region. It is a mountain temple with many important cultural properties, and you can feel history, nature, and faith.
Located in Shijimi-cho, Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, Gaya-in is a Tendai sect temple that is said to have been founded by Gyoki about 1,300 years ago. It once had a vast site and was a large temple with many buildings. The main hall, Tahoto pagoda, and Jogyo-do hall still remain today, and many of these are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. The Tahoto pagoda in particular is beautiful in its architectural style and is worth seeing.

The temple grounds are surrounded by rich nature and show beautiful expressions in every season. In the season of fresh green leaves, the vibrant greenery and in autumn, the colorful autumn leaves decorate the temple grounds, delighting the eyes of visitors. You can experience a peaceful mind by strolling through the quiet space while feeling the weight of history. Inside the main hall, the principal image of Bishamonten (a secret Buddha) is usually not open to the public, but you can quietly pray to it.

Gaya-in was burned down during Hideyoshi's attack on Miki Castle during the Sengoku period, but was rebuilt in the early Edo period.
